EAM PRESERVATION
OAKLAND
CEMETERY
Oakland Cemetery
Oakland was opened in 1850 and has undergone numerous transformations since. Today it serves Atlanta as a botanical garden, entertainment space, sculpture museum, history lesson and peaceful sanctuary.
Working as an intern under Ashley Shares, Director of Preservation for the Historic Oakland Foundation, I learned to stabilize, repair, and restore a built environment comprised of granite, marble, concrete and limestone.
In the second half of the year, I worked with Neale Nickels, Director of Capital Projects, to document and record the historic Bell Tower Building - a dignified icon of the cemetery. The building was scheduled for a significant adaptive renovation so detailed records of its existing condition prior to construction were essential
