EAM PRESERVATION
First Missionary Baptist Church
Originally called First Baptist Colored, then First African Baptist, then rechristened First Missionary Baptist in the mid-1960s, this building was completed in the spring of 1901 after nearly 12 years of construction. It was the congregation’s second house of worship and represented a dramatic upgrade in terms of capacity and stature. Embellished with elements of classic gothic revival architecture, this imposing brick and wood structure has served generations as a spiritual and social center for Thomasville’s African American community.

Drawing on a variety of historic archives and primary documents as well as extensive on-site analysis of systems and materials, the completed Historic Structure Report, provides a comprehensive evaluation of the building, the history of its congregation and recommendations for preservation treatments.
